New Orleans, 1856.
Along the city’s industrial riverfront, Lucien Desmarais, Maeve O’Rourke, Ruth Heller, and Isaac discover that an ordinary gas lamp conceals something far more dangerous: a strange pylon capable of exposing multiple physical outcomes at once.
Their experiments begin with something small—a single nail and two possible ways for it to fall. But when Anaïs Boudreaux joins their investigation, curiosity gives way to a far more frightening realization. The pylon does not simply predict what might happen. Under the pressure of collective observation, it can be made to agree with one version of reality over another.
The danger becomes immediate when a rotten warehouse hoist beam breaks above Maeve’s brother, Finn. One possible trajectory sends it outward toward him. Another brings it safely down.
To save Finn, the five witnesses must see the same outcome together:
Down, not out.
Their agreement works—but forcing reality to choose creates consequences none of them understand. As the pylon cracks and the surrounding gas lamps begin to fail, the children learn that choosing a safer outcome does not make the rejected possibilities disappear without cost.
The Lamp That Agreed is a historical supernatural mystery about collective witness, responsibility, competing realities, and the danger of discovering that the world may obey anyone capable of making enough people agree.
